Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association pushes for stronger sustainability frameworks

Pushed by cloud adoption, digital companies and artificial intelligence (AI), regional necessity for data hubs is projected to grow nearly 20% annually through 2028. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that Southeast Asia’s information centre electricity use will almost double by 2030 contrasted to 2024– a pattern mirrored throughout the broader APAC area.

The APDCA members include leading international providers, such as AirTrunk, Equinix, Digital Realty, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, and Princeton Digital Group.

” Balancing power sustainability with the rising demand for digital infrastructure is among APAC’s defining difficulties,” says Jeremy Deutsch, chair of APDCA. “With the ideal policy frameworks, Asia-Pacific governments can ensure that digital change advances hand in hand with net-zero ambitions.”

The Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association (APDCA) has actually released a brand-new white paper calling for better guideline and sector partnership to enhance energy sustainability around data centres in the region.

The white paper emphasize best practices to improve energy performance throughout the information centre lifecycle– from site selection, design and building and construction to operations and monitoring. It additionally suggests plan actions to speed up accessibility to clean and renewable energy through stronger grid framework and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

Developers are urged to collaborate carefully with regulators and market partners to establish constant energy performance standards throughout the APAC markets.

Among the examples presented is Singapore’s BCA-IMDA Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC)– an accreditation scheme collectively established by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to identify data hubs with strong sustainability functionality and energy-efficient practices.

Labelled Data Centres and Energy Sustainability: A Regional Perspective on Best Practices and Policy Frameworks, the paper was published on Oct 27 and outlines approaches to reduce the environmental influence of information centres while meeting the climbing requirement for digital infrastructure in Asia-Pacific (APAC).
